I have put together a basic screencast on how to use Garageband ’09 (in iLife ’09) for making custom ringtones for your iPhone.
In this video I start creating the ringtone by beginning a new project. You can also begin by using the “iPhone Ringtone” option. I chose to not do it this way because the “iPhone Ringtone” option provides a sample ringtone at the start. I wanted to show how to start a fresh ringtone.
This screencast was specifically made for Rachel Reuben (@rachelreuben on Twitter) who just got her new iPhone yesterday!

This certainly is not the only way to create a ringtone, but I do hope it helps you in making one for yourself!
EXTRA: For those viewing this post on their iPhones or other mobile devices…
I have embedded a Youtube version of the same video below for the readers of edu.Mac.nation who visit on their mobile devices.
Also, this provides an opportunity to test out the quality of the video and audio on either site. Let me know what you think!

/ March 21, 2009I really did ramble there a bit! Sorry about that. Still getting the workflow down for making screencasts.

/ March 22, 2009So very helpful Michael, Thanks! I still have an older version of iLife/Garage Band, but it works basically the same way. Do you know how to add a fade out at the end of the loop? I also learned yesterday that GarageBand/iTunes limits your loops to 40 seconds for ringtones, so it's important to pick a section that doesn't go longer than that, or it won't work. Thanks again!

/ March 22, 2009Excellent question regarding fades…
There is a volume button on the left side of the screen, right in the
track settings. If you press the volume button it should display a
long line running across the top of your track. Near the end you can
click on this line to put a “point”. A little bit further down place
another point. Preferably after the track has ended. Then click on
that point and pull it down. It should drop the volume out/fade out
your track.
When get home I will snap a shot of it for you and post an update.

/ March 22, 2009Also, thank you for mentioning the time limit. I forgot to mention
that in the video. I think the time limit is in place because most
phones switch to voicemail after 30-40 seconds.
Sidenote: the Youtube embed is now working in Mobile Safari!

/ March 22, 2009Here is a link to an image for the audio fade. I made a mistake in my description. It is not the “volume” button. It is the arrow button. I have labeled it in the image…
