[Rumor] Is MMS (Multimedia Messaging) coming soon?

For iPhone owners the only way we can share an image over the cellular network is through email. This is a problem if we want to send the image to another individual who does not have a smartphone. We can send it only to their email address. For example, my sister has a Blackberry and if she sends me an MMS I receive a text message which informs me that I should visit a web address and type in a special code (I then need to find a paper to write the code on!). This is inconvenient and can be frustrating. My sister now knows to just email the image instead.

If this rumor is true (something many have hoped for since the iPhone first came out) it would be one less thing for individuals to complain about regarding the iPhone feature set. Hopefully it will not be an extra charge from AT&T.

Next feature addition… hopefully copy and paste!

AT&T Playing Around With iPhone MMS Possibility, Wireless Network “Caching”

AT&T is playing around with some ‘wireless network caching’ methods that may trickle down into how iPhone users experience sending multimedia messages. The surprising thing, it’s not new technology.

mmsiconWe first started hearing about something similar about a week ago, however remained hesitant to report it until we learned anything substantial. After a few emails back and forth and some genuinely curious phone calls, we’ve been able to get a grasp of how AT&T may offer true MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) for iPhone users. ‘It would involve sending each other links, instead of images. Person A sends a link of an image that has been compressed and ‘cached’ (for lack of a better word), to Person B, who can then view the image in a browser.’ Given the current functionality in Apple’s Mobile Safari browser, this definitely seems plausible. Currently, it is possible to save images in Mobile Safari by simply holding a particular image down for about two seconds and selecting ‘Save Image.’ So we know the functionality is there…
